Ein unverwechselbarer Stil hat sich hier herausgebildet, der sich deutlich von jenen anderer Regionen in Afrika abhebt. ... Die Formen sind im allgemeinen eher wuchtig, rundlich, die Gesichter pausbäckig mit abstehenden Ohren, hervortretenden Augen; der Mund ist oft zu einem Grinsen geöffnet und läßt die Zahnreihen sehen. ... Humor und die Freude am Grotesken fließt nicht selten in die Werke mit ein. ... Die kleinen menschengestaltigen Skulpturen sind Zauberfiguren, die durch "Medizinen", das heißt durch Substanzen mit magischer Kraft, wirksam gemacht werden. ... Kleinere Figuren aus Holz, seltener aus Elfenbein, dienten als Amulette zum Schutz ihres Trägers oder fanden Verwendung in der "schwarzen Magie". Viele dieser Zauberfiguren haben eine oder mehrere viereckige Öffnungen am Körper, die die magischen Substanzen enthalten. Um dem Fetisch vor der Weitergabe an Fremde seine Zauberkraft zu nehmen, wurden diese Kästchen oft geöffnet und die "Medizin" entfernt.
