Die kleinen menschengestaltigen Skulpturen sind Zauberfiguren, die durch "Medizinen", das heißt durch Substanzen mit magischer Kraft, wirksam gemacht werden. ... Kleinere Figuren aus Holz, seltener aus Elfenbein, dienten als Amulette zum Schutz ihres Trägers oder fanden Verwendung in der "schwarzen Magie". Viele dieser Zauberfiguren haben eine oder mehrere viereckige Öffnungen am Körper, die die magischen Substanzen enthalten. Um dem Fetisch vor der Weitergabe an Fremde seine Zauberkraft zu nehmen, wurden diese Kästchen oft geöffnet und die "Medizin" entfernt.</i>
